Making family dentistry easier

You can start looking after your child’s oral health even before their teeth start to come through

At Bulimba Dental we work with many young families. One of the main things we are asked is when is the best time to start brushing for a child?

The answer is easy: when their first tooth starts to come through.

You can help to maintain your child’s oral health and help their baby teeth come through by gently wiping their gums with a damp cloth. This keeps their gums clean, which reduces bad bacteria and helps maintain healthy gums.

It is also a good idea not to put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. The sugar content in these will promote decay overnight (plus sucking on a bottle is not good for their jawbone development). You see, when we sleep we produce less salvia which means there is less protection against bad bacteria.

Your child’s oral health

Baby (or deciduous teeth) teeth are important because they pave the way and hold the space for the permanent teeth. This is just one of the reasons why you should help your child maintain optimal oral health. Baby teeth also help with speech and jaw development.

One of the best ways to look after your child’s teeth is to use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste (about a pea-sized drop) to help fight against cavities. Cavities are one of the worst problems in young children and that they are easily preventable.

Bringing your child to the dentist

At Bulimba Dental we recommend that you bring your child in for a visit when their first tooth erupts. This will allow our team to assess your child’s oral health and determine how their baby teeth are coming along.

An advantage to bringing your child to the dentist at an early age is that they become familiar with their dentist. A visit to the dentist for your child then becomes routine, something they do because it’s good for them. Our friendly and caring team are always happy to accommodate families.

At our Bulimba dental practice we provide preventive treatments for children to ensure their long-term oral health

A baby tooth falling out naturally is fine. It’s expected. However, if your child loses a tooth too soon it can negatively impact how their adult teeth come through. In fact if a baby tooth falls out too soon it can result in the adult tooth coming through crooked. This is one of the things that can lead to the need for orthodontic work.

At Bulimba Dental we offer a range of treatments for children, including fissure sealants and fluoride treatments. For children playing sports we also offer custom-made mouthguards. The advantage of a custom-made mouthguard as opposed to an off-the-shelf one, is that mouthguards we make offer more protection and comfort.
