When it comes to your teeth, it may only take one accidental fall to cause major damage to your smile.
Thanks to modern dentistry, we have a plethora of cosmetic treatments that are able to virtually restore your smile to its full potential.
So how can cosmetic dentistry fix my smile?
Here at Bulimba Dental, our cosmetic treatments are:
- Inlays and Onlays
- Teeth whitening
- Dental implants
Depending on the nature of your problem, we may advise you to consider multiple treatments to achieve the best results. This article will explain a couple of different cases where one or more of the above treatments have been used to restore a patient’s smile.
#1 Combined teeth whitening and porcelain veneers
For minor alignment problems where teeth exhibit gaps in-between, porcelain veneers are able to provide great results.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that replace a small amount of the tooth’s enamel when placed. Patients tend to choose porcelain veneers to correct one or more of the flowing cosmetic concerns:
- chips and breaks
- minor misalignment
- wear (from grinding or other issues)
- irregularly shaped teeth
- gaps between teeth
In this particular case, porcelain veneers were used to fill in the gaps between the teeth and also to add a little length to the teeth so they lined up neatly with the bottom row.
Why was a teeth whitening treatment necessary?
Porcelain veneers are useful for discolouration problems because they act as a cover over the surface of your teeth. Because porcelain veneers are stain resistant, this patient had teeth whitening for the surrounding teeth so they all matched.
A whitening treatment wasn’t exactly necessary but it is more beneficial for you to match your natural teeth to the beautiful white veneers rather than match your veneers to discoloured teeth.
#2 Tooth-coloured restoration for front tooth
Depending on the depth of the facture, there are a few different methods of restoring a tooth. This patient has undergone a tooth-coloured restoration of a front incisor tooth that has had a mid-crown fracture.
What are the different kinds of restorations used to repair broken teeth?
· White fillings
White fillings are used for very minor problems such as decay or replacement of amalgam fillings. They can be altered in colour to perfectly match the colour of your teeth and provide a natural looking and strong protective coat to help your teeth resist further damage.
· Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are restorations for teeth that are beyond the repair of fillings. Inlays are a great alternative to crowns as they do not require the removal of excessive amounts of the tooth’s natural structure.
Fabricated from porcelain materials, the restoration is not quite as strong as a crown but it is still able to last a lifetime if cared for properly.
Crowns are one of the strongest long-term solutions when restoring a single tooth back to its full function and appearance. Fabricated to replace the visible part of the tooth, crowns are made from porcelain materials that look and act as a natural tooth would.
Tooth restorations can be fabricated and placed in as little as a single visit
