Back to school dental tips: what you need to know

Back to school dental tips from Bulimba Dental

Give your kids the head start they need with Bulimba Dental’s back to school dental tips

By taking care of your child’s teeth as soon as they erupt you are giving your child the best chance of having good dental health in their adult life.

Did you know that decay, infected or damaged baby teeth can negatively affect the growth and development of adult teeth?

Baby teeth are important for getting your mouth used to teeth, as well as for speech development and chewing.

Ensuring your child takes care of their oral health, and that they understand the importance of doing so, can go a long way to helping them maintain optimal dental health throughout their life.

3 back to school dental health tips

Maintaining good oral hygiene made easier with these three tips from Bulimba Dental:

  1. Create a routine

Everyone should brush their teeth twice a day and floss (at least) once a day. We appreciate that during the morning rush your child can forget to brush their teeth. For this reason,  we recommend making it fun by letting them choose a toothbrush with their favourite colour or cartoon character. Also, try brushing your teeth with them to show even grown-ups have to brush their teeth.

While it would be ideal for your child to brush their teeth at school, this is often not possible. Alternatively, rinsing their mouth with water after each meal or snack at school can help to remove food particles in their mouth which can cause plaque build-up.

  1. Regular dental check-ups

The Australian Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist twice a year. For your child, this means a regular check-up and clean. If necessary one of Bulimba Dental’s dentist can apply fissure sealants to teeth with deep crevices.

A fissure sealant is made from composite resin which blends with the tooth, making it easier for the tooth to be cleaned and helps prevent decay.

  1. Custom-made mouthguard

Keep your child’s teeth safe with a custom-made mouthguard from Bulimba Dental. Custom-made mouthguards not only protect your teeth, gums and jaws from damage, they have also been known to mitigate some of the damage caused by concussion.

If your child is active in contact sports, we highly recommend a custom-made mouthguard. These are better than over-the-counter mouthguards because they are created by a dentist and shaped to suit your teeth.

Buying a custom-made mouthguard from Bulimba Dental can allow your child to stay safe while they have fun playing sports.
