Replacing a tooth is about more than just restoring the appearance of your smile. Losing a tooth affects the health of your jaw, gums and remaining teeth. Your remaining teeth will shift towards the gap left by a missing tooth which can adversely affect both your gums and your bite.
Also, when you lose a tooth the bone that holds the tooth root in place gradually starts to dissolve. When that bone is gone, it does not grow back. This is another reason why replacing a tooth in a timely fashion is important. When you lose jawbone density it can potentially lead to further tooth loss as well as give your face a sunken appearance.
A whole tooth replacement
Unlike other forms of tooth replacement treatment, a dental implant is a whole tooth replacement. Unlike dentures replaced the tooth above the gum line, the dental implant acts as an artificial tooth root for a dental crown or bridge. This provides you with a much better and healthier dental treatment.
Dental implants are an ideal solution for replacing a missing tooth or teeth.
At Bulimba Dental Dr Eric Sham will carry out your dental implant treatment. The placement of your dental implant requires a small incision in your gum-line, with the implant then gently guided into your jawbone. Local anaesthetic ensures you are completely comfortable at all times, with many people who receive implants returning to their normal daily routine the following day.
What’s involved
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically inserted into your jawbone. It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for your jawbone. The length of time it takes for your jaw to heal around the dental implant depends on:
- Your oral health
- Your overall health
- Your body’s ability to heal
- Whether the implant was placed in the upper or lower jaw: if the implant is placed in the upper jaw it may take longer to heal.
Once your jawbone has healed around the dental implant it will provide a solid foundation to which a crown or bridge may be secured.
*Based on your individual needs additional fees may be incurred for services such as bone grafting or imaging services where required.
Surgical Warning
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
